Woman in Army Row Cadet Overcoat Incident

Mrs Elizabeth Fairfax Ayres wife of Lieut Col Charles G Ayres of the Eighth Cavalry faces a formal War Department investigation ordered by Secretary Taft on Roosevelt suggestion. The probe centers on her criticisms of Col Robert Lee Howze cadet commander at West Point after cadet overcoats were worn by visitors on Easter Sunday. Capt L W Oliver lodged a complaint prompting a written report to Washington. Mrs Ayres wrote to Roosevelt and top officials before the matter was turned to Inspector General Col Mills who began hearings. The case intertwines with overcoat regulations and implications for Ayres and Howze, with potential links to promotion hopes and West Point discipline.
