In Springfield Illinois the State Republican convention united behind Speaker Cannon as the favorite son for the national presidential contest while praising Grant and denouncing taft. The tariff plank emphasizes protection for American workers and farmers and opposes trusts and monopolies, framing Cannon’s stance as tariff adjustment rather than revision.
