Denial from Simpers Gained by Threats in Maryland Trial

In Elkton Maryland March 23 the State rested in the John W Simpers murder case against Attorney Albert Constable Bro in Cecil County Court. Simpers denied the crime and alleged Warden Wesler of the Maryland Penitentiary used threats to extract a confession. He admitted signing a written confession but challenged its contents, while witnesses described his demeanor as restrained under cross examination. The trial drew emotional testimony from his sister and a Philadelphia witness who supported Simpers, as neighbors warned of intense public feeling. A verdict of first degree murder was anticipated with sentencing to follow and Simpers scheduled for return to the Maryland Penitentiary.
