Brownsville Ammunition Sales Probe T: Corporal William Ryan Testifies About Government Property Aids

Cor. William Ryan of Company K Twenty-sixth Infantry testified before the Senate Committee on Military Affairs that he sold 1,000 rounds of government ammunition to a junk dealer in Brownsville and defaced serial numbers on six Krag rifles. He claimed he acted under orders, not believing wrongdoing, while others described a surplus of Krag Jorgensen and Springfield ammunition at Fort Brown and easy access for soldiers to obtain extra gear. The hearing cited a Penrose court-martial exoneration but found the Brownsville shooting was done by Twenty-fifth Infantry men, with Gen McCaskey forwarding the telegram as context.
