Rate Rises Considered By Railroads In 1917

Officials expect a 10 to 15 percent rail rate increase with Eastern roads asking about 15 percent and Southern and Western roads around 10 percent. An average 12 percent rise could add roughly 325 million dollars in annual revenue based on last year’s business, while total 1916 railroad receipts neared four billion with freight income near 2.75 billion. Costs rose sharply late 1916 and early 1917 as fuel and supplies bought on preprice-shock contracts, yet operating income lagged behind last year despite higher traffic. The Interstate Commerce Commission will review the suspension request and the hearings will include shippers, merchants and civic groups.
