Pig cornea transplant marks first in medical history
In Baltimore at the Hye, Mar, and Throat Hospital a three month old boy received the entire cornea from a pig brought from Germany. Surgeons say the operation is a new step, as pig corneas have not restored sight before while human corneas have twice been transplanted. The Kane child, born blind, already had partial sight restored in one eye in a prior procedure. The pig eye was chloroformed, cornea removed, grafted with fine needle and silk, and will be bandaged for about a week.
