Coal Operators Fear Antitrust Laws Says Coal Operators Fear Antitrust Laws
Mine operators in the central competitive bituminous coal field refuse to meet miners on a new labor agreement fearing conspiracy in restraint of trade charges. George H. Cushing of the American Wholesale Coal Association says the operators welcome a possible strike to end the checkoff system, which withholds miners union dues, and notes a three month coal stock. He cites indictments of operators and union officials in 1920 and a 226-operator grand jury case in Indianapolis as reasons not to repeat the same legal exposure, contending public officials’ wage conference campaigns risk misrepresentation. He claims unions aim to organize nationwide wage accords and eventual nationalization of mines through public opinion.
