Wiley in Drug Row Heated Exchange Over Opium Control
Dr Harvey W Wiley appeared as a private citizen before the Pure Food Board advocating strict regulation of opium morphine cocaine and other habit forming drugs. He clashed with John J Queeny and other manufacturers calling them dopers and later modified his language. The hearing discussed labeling skull and bone insignia on preparations and who bears costs for regulation with Wiley insisting small doses fuel the drug habit and internal revenue control was urged.
