Taft Urges Centralization of Isthmian Commission Power
Secretary of War Taft writes to President Roosevelt advocating a rearrangement of the Isthmian Canal Commission to place executive authority in one or at most three members. He argues delays stem from the commission’s inherent clumsiness and proposes a plan to tighten control, with Roosevelt promising to consider the proposal. Roosevelt confirms intent to study a reorganization and hints at naming a new commission, possibly with Horace G. Burt as business head and several railroad leaders discussed for key posts.
