Mantell’s Lear Shines Yet Falls Short of Ideal Pathos
Robert Mantell’s King Lear at the National Theater draws focus to the kingly figure with moments of pathos and vehemence. The forest scenes expose limits. Kent, Cordelia, Regan, and Goneril receive strong support from Gordon Burley, Miss Russell, Kingsbury, and Grey, while Mantell’s best is in the kingly flashes of authority and curse. The Merchant of Venice follows with mixed verdicts as Mantell’s handling of the lyric and Portia’s role draw debate among critics. Miss Russell’s Portia is praised while Antonio’s portrayal lacks dignity.
