Mantell in King Lear at National Theater Leaves Mixed Promise

Robert Mantell’s King Lear at the National Theater draws praise for his kingly presence and moments of pathos, but critics fault the overall depth and the forest sequence. Supporting players Gordon Burley and Miss Russell earn solid notices while delays in the Merchant of Venice revival dim the program. Mantell’s handling of the Portia scene and Bassanio’s casket moment draw sharp critique for omitting Shakespeare’s intended lyric, though Miss Russell’s Portia and Miss Kingsbury as Emilia receive favorable notes. Burglary report ends with no loot taken after alarm from Mrs Pardoe’s home.
