Potomac Floods Cumberland Area as Rivers Rise Sharply
Heavy rain and rapid snowmelt push the Potomac River higher than in years, flooding Beall and Johnson Streets and back streets in Cumberland Maryland. Wills Creek nears the railroad bridge, and trains detour as sections of tracks flood. The cement mall bridge collapses, injuring no one but causing major damage to the Horseheads Construction Company. Drowned at Mount Savage seven year old Wilbert Myers perishes after a fall into the torrent. Residents evacuate as water floods the Cumberland Baseball Park area and the lower coal wharfs. The National area reports similar rises over Lonaconing Mount Savage and Piedmont with anticipated further flooding. Local lines are interrupted by a freight wreck near Chaffee, and electrical storms cause damage in Winchester and Frederick County Maryland.
