Tale of abuses at sea rocked mule transport case
Laula M. H. Levitch of Memphis alleges harsh treatment and underpayment of muleteers on the British transport Duneden during a six week voyage. He claims exorbitant clothing costs, coercion to work, threats of prison, and no pay upon return, with contracts signed in New Orleans later nullified aboard ship. The Department of Justice inquiry will be pursued in New Orleans and Newport News.
