Leaf tobacco markets show steady demand despite bad roads
Reports from several Virginia cities note weather and poor roads hinder handling yet last week’s sales reached 30,000 pounds with an average price near 10 cents. Total sales to March 1 clock 11,250,000 pounds as farmers plan for similar acreages amid snow and cold. In Durham and Petersburg regions, leaf tobacco remains light and weather continues to slow shipments while Lynchburg sees heavier receipts and stable prices. A Cumberland, Maryland story reports dismissal of a receiver petition for the Penn Garrett Coal Company after it recently invested 360,090 in plant improvements.
