Central Presbyterian Church Choir History in Washington

The Central Presbyterian Church choir in Washington began under John C. Whitwell as precentor and Laura Coyle as organist. The all female choir, a distinctive unbalanced setup, yielded unusually sweet music. Over the years succession included Miss Maury Shields, Letitia Elliott, Minnie McCormick, and Miss Hattie Rogers, with Dr W Carter aiding before the rise of Rev Dr Pitter who led a famous misread “Dennis” tune incident. Bruce Elliott now serves as precentor, continuing a lineage from G Sargent Elliott and John Hunter.
