Oleo Frauds Denied by MacVeagh Ruling on Oleomargarine
Secretary of the Treasury Frank Lyon Paul MacVeagh announced that settlements totaling 123000 in oleomargarine cases were not fraud prosecutions but tax disputes. He insisted no intentional fraud existed, noting the government aimed to enforce tax law rather than pursue criminal fraud. The cases involved two types of oleomargarine, one colorable as butter with higher tax, the other not colored and taxed minimally. An attempted discovery of naturally colored oil failed, and after prolonged testing, it was determined the oil was artificially colored by sulfur. Manufacturers stopped using the oil once the finding was publicized. The settlements followed congressional and court consideration, with no admission of fraud. Judge Landis is expected to reopen the inquiry into oleomargarine tax frauds.
