Polar Quest to Pole Through Harsh Antarctic Winter

Amundsen and his team endured extreme cold as they advanced toward the South Pole, describing treacherous ice, sledge travel, and careful celestial observations. They reached near the pole on December 16 and camped after confirming positions, then began a swift return aided by favorable weather, noting plans to study the Ross Barrier and new mountain ranges linked to Queen Maud and King Edward lands.

Virginia Cash Bill Passed In Virginia General Assembly

Special to The Washington Post Richmond March. Both chambers spent extensive time on the conference report for the appropriation bill which cut primary school funds from 3509 000 to 444 000 and trimmed Harrisonburg Normal School aid to 28 000, totaling 986 6191 for year one and 6 508 240 for year two. The report was concurred and sent to the governor for signature. The Senate amendments were few but provided protection for primaries and the measure was seen as better than nothing. The legislature also passed a bill establishing a home for the feeble minded at the epileptic colony and a measure to issue bonds for public improvements, mainly for Norfolk but applicable to any city.

Amundsen Claims Pole First Amid Pole Discovery Controversy

Reports from Christiania say King Haakon and Queen Maud consent to naming the newly found Antarctic territory after them as Amundsen announces reaching the south pole. English papers debate whether Scott also reached the pole, noting Shackleton’s belief in Amundsen while Turmoil over timing and lack of explicit proof fuels uncertainty.
