Notorious embezzler Hull linked to local bookkeeper role

Joseph A. Hull, a career criminal and associate of Alonzo A. Whiteman, worked as bookkeeper for B. J. Prescott & Co. in Washington. He embezzled about 800 dollars, dodged the law with hypnotic influence claims, and fled after a temporary discharge. Hull’s history includes multiple embezzlements, jail terms, and international flight with a long spree of bogus checks. Prescott regrets employing him after learning of his past crimes.

Princeton University announced the residual estate of Mrs. J. Thompson Swan worth about 30 thousand dollars to aid graduate school development. Georgian man kills wife then commits suicide

In Augusta on Market street M L Cohen, a young Hebrew, shot his wife at night after waking, then killed himself. The wife died after hours of failed recovery. Trainmen Killed in Latrobe Yard Collision

In Latrobe Pennsylvania two trainmen Frank Alan and 8 BE Nixon were killed in a rear end crash in the Derry yards of the Pennsylvania Railroad. They were in the caboose when the engine of a through freight crashed into it wrecking the caboose completely. The accident followed a derailment report and preliminary details indicate a fatal collision with a freight engine.

Negro Graduates Meet at Israel M E Church

A gathering of nearly two hundred graduates from the local high school for colored pupils was held at Israel M E Church. President Grant Juzas presided as resolutions from the District of Columbia Commissioners were adopted. Prof Kelly Miler of Howard University urged graduates to seize opportunities and be good citizens. Attendees included Mrs A J Cooper, Miss Julia Brooks, and Miss Maud Dowling. A subscription opened for the Cardoza bust fund.

Clerks to Pay for Phone Messages Cited in Post

A letter from Washington, D. C., March 1906 corrects the Post about department clerks and telephone messages. It states clerks in Agriculture could not send messages for long but now may at 3 cents each, while Treasury clerks still face a 5 cent fee unless the message comes from a favored official. The writer argues the Post’s item on clerks’ use of phones is inaccurate and injurious, supporting the Post’s critique of graft.

H H Rogers and J D Archbold, Standard Oil executives, visited the White House for about an hour after dining at the Arlington. Butler Is a Forger Caught in Northwest City

Detectives Flather and Horne arrested Henry Grant a negro butler at Mrs. Dexter’s 1741 K street home after a two week manhunt for a northwest city forger. Grant confessed to forging checks with names of prominent people and sending them with visiting cards to merchants to cash. He admitted to obtaining about 300 and said he tried to pass more but merchants refused.
