Ice Gorges Threaten Potomac Flood From Williamsport to Hancock
Special reports from Hagerstown and Cumberland detail a Potomac rise fed by ice break up. Ice backs ten to twenty feet high span a mile or more between Williamsport and Hancock, raising fears of damage to the C and O Canal and river properties. Rains swell the stream, with freshening ice moving downstream. Cumberland sees slower rise and no immediate freshet danger. Snow remains heavy in the mountains and continued cold persists.
