The Olympic Games Committee faces criticism for selecting a weakened U S squad and setting an early April date that precludes college athletes from participating. Critics argue the timing blocks top amateurs, a point highlighted during a New York meeting discussing the team bound for Athens.
An analysis shows the United States Olympic team could be defeated by a hypothetical college all star lineup from the East and West in events staged for Athens. The article lists events, evaluates top contenders from Penn, Yale, Chicago, Harvard, and other schools, and argues college athletes hold advantages in most matches except two events. It notes several named athletes and colleges, and discusses implications for selection and amateur status.
