Social whirl strains as Mrs Astor ages and royal ties loom
The piece charts Mrs. Astor's waning health and reduced social activity at her 42 North Avenue home while London and European circles buzz with royal matches, young heirs, and American arrivals. It notes the Dowager Empress of Russia visiting England, Kaiser intrigues, and New York society planning a grand French ball to fund a Paris school.
