President Roosevelt transmitted to Congress the Commerce and Labor summary on beef packers. The Big Six slaughtered 5.52 million cattle in 1903, about 45 percent of U.S. total, with net profit per head around 80 cents. The study questions high margins between cattle and beef and notes profits from by products and private car mileage are modest.

Margins and By products in Early 1900s Meat Trade
The investigation shows margins between cattle and beef prices were affected by by products like hides oil and stearin. By product values fluctuated, with hides peaking in 1902 then falling, dragging per head value from 6.98 to 5.79 dollars. Despite shifts, overall profits at Armour Swift and Schwarzchild remained stable around 13 cents per hundred pounds dressed beef in 1902 03 and 1903 04.
