Bonds Shift in Senate as War Tax Revisions Near Finish
Senate finance committee moved toward approving $540 million in new bonds as part of a total $1.449 billion war tax package, roughly $51 million short of the House plan. Aimed at funding war expenses, the measure would set an 18 percent tax on excess profits and exempt certain individuals and professional groups. Critics warn repeal of drawback payments to manufacturers could harm U.S. competitiveness in the global sugar market.
