U S Note Demands Direct Settlement Over Frye Sinking
The United States rejects Germany’s prize court route for indemnity over the William P Frye which the German cruiser Prinz Eitel Friedrich sank with its cargo of wheat. The State Department notes insist that treaty provisions do not justify sinking a neutral vessel and that indemnity should be settled by direct diplomatic negotiation. The note, dated June 24 and delivered by Ambassador Gerard, argues prize court relief cannot bind U S obligations and seeks prompt reparation for damages.
