Tax Boost Seen in New Estimate

Assessor William P. Richards submitted his tax estimate for the fiscal year to the District commissioners yesterday. It is believed the 2 percent maximum will be needed, with a likelihood the full 2 percent may be assessed and doubt the municipal government can return to the 1.44 percent rate. The change to 66-40 raises local taxes. District appropriation exceeds 21 million dollars, the largest in Washington history, lifting the amount to be raised to about 12.6 million dollars if the 2 percent rate is adopted. A $12,000 house could rise from 120 to 160 dollars in tax, while large office buildings may pay 3,000 to 4,000 dollars each, hinting at higher rents. The current assessment on lands and buildings is 436,623,640 with 6,399,354 raised last year.

Washington readers were told to order coal immediately by J R Zimmerman secretary of the Retail Coal Dealers Board of Trade.
