Tillman Gillespie inquiry yields results on stock return
Fourth Vice President Thayer advocates limiting railroad firms to transportation business. Chief Accountant Hoff explains why he returned coal stock, as the Tillman Gillespie inquiry produces results.
Railroad Officials Scrutiny Over Stock and Land Holdings
Frank Hoff, chief accountant at the Pennsylvania Railroad, admitted accepting stock from a car company doing business on the Pennsylvania line and returning it as a probe began, and said he received cigars. He also owns a $7,000 share of real estate along the railroad. John B Thayer, fourth vice president, urged end to railroad ownership of coal stock or land, saying transport firms should focus on transportation as the Tillman Gillespie resolution aimed to achieve.

Pennsylvania Railroad testifies on coal relief and private cars
Witness Thayer argues the Pennsylvania Railroad could handle traffic in its own cars but warns forcing operations now could create vast contractual damages. He notes 15 000 private cars on the system and says coal famine shipments favored contract operators while some shippers sought speculative pricing. He asserts the railroad aimed to relief consumers, acknowledging possible honest mistakes amid wartime pressure.
