The House passed the wool bill 224 to 100, lowering raw wool duties to 20 percent from 44 and reducing wool product tariffs to about 42 percent ad valorem. A Republican move to delay until the tariff board reports failed 18 to 118. President’s message after the vote interrupted the joyous moment.

In Wheeling West Virginia on June 2 her petition for a writ of habeas corpus seeks release of husband David A McKee alleged held by his father I McKee and Rev J I Pittell pastor of Second United Presbyterian Church. The petitioner claims the couple were married and that she fears deprivation of his liberty during a family dispute. The case before Judge HL Adserves involves the husband’s confinement and possible guardianship actions.
Bid for the entire 50.1 million issue tops 100 thousand and 009 dollars at 102 30 with OOO at 192 23. Mrs H A Spear of 1438 Newton St NW urges safety in government bonds citing Panama Canal funding as motive. A S Pratt & Co notes strong demand from investors and sees no need for full Treasurer deposit.
An ammonia tank explosion at Atlantic and Kentucky avenues caused a wave of sneezing across Atlantic City. Clerks, shoppers, and nearby animals were affected as hundreds fled the store and sought relief. The episode subsided only after the gas supply exhausted.
Miss Ethel Schaefer wed Victor Olsen at 10 30. In a hurried escape from wedding guests through a window she tripped in her hobble skirt and broke her left wrist. She fainted and doctors say the honeymoon will be delayed a week. The couple were chased from the bride’s home to Mrs Reid’s home by friends.
Mrs J Frank Creamer of Pittsburg ran back into a burning house to save her two pet collies after an explosion on the first floor. Firefighters found her unconscious on the stairs with the dogs under her arms.
Pittsburg Kansas, June 7 1908. Peter C Sharp, an octogenarian, will live alone under a plan to build two cottages on his bread acres, one for each wife. Anna Catherine Sharp, 79, and Celia Sharp, 61, will have separate homes while Sharp alternates meals. Neighbors report an uneasy arrangement as both wives remain under his roof yet apart inside picket fenced compounds.
Senator Jake Lea of Tennessee gave blood to save his wife Mrs Luke Lea whose life was desperate after a transfusion. She remains critical but steady and able to walk about, while the senator is expected to leave hospital soon.
The submarine Grampus under Lieut. J. P. Qiding rammed the torpedo boat Rowan during daily practice off San Diego. Grampus avoided damage and narrowly escaped sinking with all hands. Rowan suffered a hull breach on the starboard bow.
Edith Gambier testifies that Edward Gambier gave only birdlike kisses and minimal affection during their marriage begun in 1910 at the Church of the Incarnation. She says she proposed a yearly solo trip and saw him as unloving, while Gambier seeks annulment claiming the marriage never existed. The couple separated after a troubled honeymoon in Europe.
A crowd of about 26,000 gathered on the White House lawn for a public carnival honoring the silver wedding of President Taft and his wife. Mrs Taft sat on the portico with her sister and daughter while Marine Band played and electric lights lit the grounds. The event marked the sole organized demonstration of the evening with ongoing applause as guests wandered the illuminated grounds and enjoyed the musicians.
A Senate telegram read from Mrs. Taft thanked the Senate for a silver tea service given on their twenty fifth anniversary. President Taft and Mrs Taft express appreciation through Vice President Sherman and note the gift as a token of the Senate’s kindness. Delayed telegrams from Jewish societies clergy and public figures poured in through the White House as the silver wedding anniversary was celebrated.
Albany June 2 The senate tonight passed the Casilier bill restoring by the State to the FR E Lee Confederate Camp of Alexandria Va a Vienna flag captured in the civil war.
