Signs of Prosperity Pushes Market Higher
The Washington Post notes June strength in stocks aided by banking clearings and rising exports. Copper and steel show revival while railroads buy freely and foreign trade climbs, with May exports breaking records and a large trade balance. Market optimism grows despite crop uncertainty.
Canada buying steel here in Canada and U S steel ties
New York June 18 Canadian car shops overflow with orders. A heavy export contract for plain structural material was placed with United States Steel Products Company for shipment to Canada. American car and locomotive works run at about 40 percent capacity due to lean railroad equipment orders. Rail orders show a rise in total tonnage for five months, with 40 000 tons for Northern Pacific and 20 000 tons for Great Northern under negotiation. Major orders loom from Baltimore and Ohio Queen and Orient, and Erie is authorized to purchase locomotives. Largest local contract was 3 700 tons for States Rubber Company. Steel terminal specs for Kansas City require 8 000 tons. Pig iron trade remains prominent with growing factory and street steel demand as supplies tighten.

Postmaster General cites savings from rail mail pay reform
Postmaster General Hitchcock announced findings from a yearlong probe into railway mail transportation. He said about 278 of 394 companies profit from mail service while 116 lose money, and that trunk lines overpay while smaller lines would gain, aiming to cut government costs by roughly $9.1 million annually. He urged Congress to authorize readjusted pay and changes to the compensation method, with expectations of a postal surplus enabling possible one cent letter postage after second class rates are adjusted.
