Appeal on Leeds Pearls. Treasury Objects to Appraisers Ruling
The Treasury Department will likely appeal to the courts from a board of general appraisers decision in the case of pearls imported by William B. Leeds the tinplate maker. Three years ago Leeds hired a New York dealer to obtain pearls intended for his wife and thirty seven pearls were bought abroad at a cost of 220000. Customs assessed 60 percent duty totaling 132000, Leeds refused claiming the pearls were drilled and sold as mere ornament. The Treasury will press an appellate path to challenge the appraisal ruling.
