West New Jersey Society and Its 18th Century Land Powers
The West New Jersey Society formed in 1691 held vast land rights in New Jersey, buying Coxe’s interest for 49000 dollars and governing lands until 1702. Though relinquishing political control to the Crown, the society retained land and survey powers, expanding holdings and shaping early colonial governance. By 1762 trustees shifted 99080 acres to northern Jersey, with later sales and disbursements ending in 1814 when Thomas Cadavalader sold all rights to Benjamin E Cooper. The current owners trace to Cooper’s heirs, with a nine-member board historically. A later note reports the largest stamp delivery to the Post Office.
