Resolute Outdrifts Vanitie In Third Elimination Race
In Newport R I on June 8 Resolute defeated Vanitie in the third elimination race of the America’s Cup defense trials covering 80 miles seaward and back. Resolute finished shortly after 5 pm while Vanitie crossed more than half an hour later, remaining over three miles behind. A light northeast wind and flaky breeze hampered performance with both yachts off the direct course much of the way. Tomorrow the yachts will sail the triangular course with lighter forecasts expected.

The Shamrock IV, Lipton’s 23 meter challenger, conducted a sailing trial of full canvas under light northeast winds. Toward Execution Rock the mainsail and headsails were set with double spreaders complicating handling. Despite overrigged appearance, observers Dennis Nicholson Col Neal and Capt Burton praised performance after one hour twenty minutes afloat. The yacht was then towed back and prepared for another session tomorrow.
