Railroad loses rate case over Virginia to Washington fares
The Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals in Wytheville ruled Washington Southern Railroad may not charge 3 cents a mile for passenger service within the state. Travelers from Washington can still save by buying a Virginia ticket to Alexandria and paying the state rate to their destination, a practice the court upheld against the railroad’s challenge to the state rate. The present Alexandria to Washington fare is 20 cents, with the Richmond to Washington fare at 3 dollars and 50 cents. A petition to adjust rates before the Interstate Commerce Commission is pending.
