Milk supply tightens as Maryland Virginia dairies exit
District health department reports many small Maryland and Virginia dairies have ceased supplying milk or had permits revoked due to strict sanitation rules. Despite reduced numbers, the District says its milk supply remains adequate, sourcing 90 percent from nearby regions and a daily 18 500 gallons from outside points. Dr Young and Dr Woodward note imports occur only in drought or emergencies and describe higher freight rates from New York.
