Halstead Trial Opens Over Embezzled Stock Certificate
Griffith Halstead, a young broker who failed in 1909, went on trial in Criminal Court No 2 charged with embezzling a stock certificate valued at thousands. Hubert I Kleinpeter, a former chauffeur for Mrs Mark Hanna, testified that Halstead promised financial gain and possession of the stock, which Kleinpeter handed over in August 1909. Defense contends the stock was deposited as a cash margin and that no crime occurred. Proctor outlined the government’s theory that Halstead diverted proceeds on August 14 to 16, 1909, and kept them. The case resumes this morning.
