House bill on meat inspection sparks debate over condemned carcasses
A House substitute to the Beveridge bill faces criticism for neglecting disease cattle and allowing condemned meat to be repurposed or shipped uninspected. Opponents warn packers could avoid disclosure of cold storage data and evade penalties, with railroads again not expressly barred from transporting uninspected meat. The measure would also create two packing classes, hindering inspection funding and traceability.
