SWITCH INJUNCTION STANDS FOR NAVY YARD TRACKS
The District Supreme Court indefinitely extends a injunction stopping the Philadelphia Baltimore and Washington railroad from removing tracks from Virginia and New Jersey avenues to the Washington Navy Yard. The naval appropriation bill in conference preserves the yard tracks as is for two years while a permanent plan is sought. The Navy Department acted on advice the railroad would tear up the line at the injunction’s end. It is expected negotiations will open the New Jersey avenue bridge over Virginia avenue upon completion of the southern approach.

Comet Halley Transit Sparks Global Scientific Effort
The May 18 19 observations of Halley’s comet tail sparked a worldwide push by astronomers meteorologists and physicists. Balloons kites and soundings sought upper atmospheric data while wireless operators and magnetometers tracked possible electromagnetic effects. Researchers aim to understand the comet’s structure and any atmospheric electrical influence despite limited dramatic events.
