Taft Changes Custom in Acceptance Speech Note
The article recalls Taft ending the old practice of sending a lengthy acceptance letter after notification. It contrasts past nominees like Harrison McKinley Blaine Garfield Hayes and Grant, who issued long letters or speeches, with Taft planning a concise front porch campaign and one combined speech rather than a separate detailed communication. It also recounts Grant’s brevity and the ceremonial letter from Judge Settle informing Ulysses S. Grant of reelection nomination.
