Battling Elements Men Repair War Ties For Telephone Lines
Veterans of signal corps and engineers from the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company braved 63 mile gales and snow to repair cables and erect poles keeping wide lands connected. In floods near Richwood and Piedmont WVa they fought water, debris, and wrecked bridges, often wading in icy water to restore service. An ex-private recalls the effort as a war on peace time battlements with Gen Pershing praising their work.
