Foundations Challenge For District Building In Washington
About 175 workers under engineer Charles A. Mackenne y tackle a heavy excavation for the District Government site. They remove 360 cubic yards daily, aim to clear 38 000 cubic yards, and plan 2300 piles up to 50 feet long. Deep western boiler rooms and a running electric pump complicate blasting with dynamite timed at noon and shift changes. Massive stone and masonry foundations demand a granite and iron heavy base, making the project among the hardest in Washington building history.
