Forgotten Man Gates Hangs In Limbo Seeks Freedom
Chicago July 2 A writ of habeas corpus for John Gates held at Joliet penitentiary moves a judge to decide if Gates is legally dead or alive. Gates killed neighbor John W Hegsel in 1881 and was sentenced to hang but the execution was never carried out. Gates has remained a model prisoner for 23 years fearing a renewal of the sentence. His sister's campaign prompted the filing, with hope that lack of execution terminates jurisdiction and grants freedom.
