Status of Inmates at St Elizabeths Without Jury Trial
The asylum for military veterans holds 600 inmates kept without jury commitments. Dr. William A. White, superintendent, declines to initiate proceedings to determine insanity. The case against Alexander F. Willis moves to higher courts, with potential appeals to the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court. The issue whether insanity can be adjudicated without a jury remains legally unsettled while reconfinement would follow if challenged.
