La Follette Attacks Preparedness and Senate Debate
Senator La Follette denounces preparedness as a financing by big interests and a tool for imperialistic schemes. He cites cinema, press, and parade influence and predicts a heated Senate vote on the 844 million dollar military plan, urged by armor plant debates and other defense measures. The discourse accompanies consent for a government project and shifting party lines amid tensions over war readiness.

President Wilson urged quick passage of the child labor bill. A Senate Democratic caucus will hear the appeal Tuesday night but leaders say the caucus pen may limit action before the August 19 adjournment. The Democratic steering committee met to review the request but found it powerless to alter the agreed legislative plan. Committees plan another meeting to set a date for the next caucus.

Minnesota Senator Clapp startled the Senate by urging the annexation of New York as a potential result of war with England. ROW OVER BUILDING BILL
Department officials denounce a House committee move to abolish the supervising architect of the Treasury as a pork grab. They cite a businesslike policy that boosted building output and saved funds, noting $750,000 was returned to the Treasury and that some new projects would cost $100,000 in towns lacking postal receipts.
