Wanted to See the President in White House Incident
A tall man wearing a white Nannal salt and yachting cap climbed the east gate of the White House before midnight and was captured by Sergt. Headley. He claimed he wished to meet the President on important business and warned of a device that could blow police away. He gave the name John C. Eckleston, 38, of Philadelphia, and carried letters to the President and from Senator Penrose and Congressman Bingham recommending him for a consulship in Rogerio, Argentina. He later denied that name, called himself Scotty the millionaire cowboy, and said he was in Washington to stay a few days and spend thousands. He collapsed from heat at the State, Way and Navy building steps and was treated at the Emergency Hospital. He has been in Washington four days, staying at the Oxford Hotel, and will be examined by police surgeons to determine his sanity.
