Courageous rescue on Potomac ends in tragedy
Charles Coe of Langdon D. C. risked his life to rescue two sailors from the Mayflower during a gale off Giesboro Point. The rescued men were taken to shore as a naval court opened into the disaster. A fourth person, 14 year old Joseph Harper, drowned after leaping from the government pier at Twenty sixth Street.

A man leaped from a pier, swam twenty minutes, and found the boy’s body a few yards out in several feet of water. Attempts at resuscitation failed. Harbor police sent the Vigilant to retrieve the body and take it to the morgue. Melville Cavanaugh praised the deceased and Mrs Harper mourns deeply.

Fall claims life of retired U S Navy captain in Philadelphia
The 72 year old Capt William W Woodhull United States Navy retired pay director plunged 50 feet down an airshaft in a West Philadelphia apartment today and died instantly. He had been resting with heart ailment and is believed to have suffered vertigo while leaning out to escape the heat. Woodhull entered the Navy in 1838 and retired in 1898.

Aeronaut Drops on Car After Parachute Jump
Denver July 16 Wayne Abbott a Denver aeronaut parachuted from 3000 to 4000 feet and landed on the front end of a street car smashing the motorman’s vestibule. Forty passengers were badly frightened a woman fainted and several were bruised in the wild scramble. Abbott was severely battered about the head and shoulders and it is feared two ribs may be fractured.

Twenty one miners died at Cascade Coal and Coke mine in Sykesville nine miles from Dubois Pennsylvania. Eleven men attempted escape after a fatal explosion caused by afterdamp from a pocket of gas.
