Mesquite transforms Hawaii forests boosting sugar output
A single mesquite seed planted in 1827 spread across the Hawaiian Islands, yielding 50 000 acres of algaroba forest that preserves soil and stores water aiding cane growing. The forests, now essential for water storage, face destruction from cattle grazing and agricultural clearing, but foresters work with authorities to restore balance while mesquite provides timber and cattle fodder.
