A hoax triggers a Senate closure as a biplane hovers above the Capitol. Vice President Sherman Hantily summons friends and dashes in an auto toward Potomac Park to witness an expected aviator landing. The aircraft circles over Northeast Washington then returns to College Park.
Thousands across Washington watched an army aeroplane circle above the city as crowds on Pennsyvania avenue and Senate offices raced to see the famed aviator Atwood. Lieut Arnold piloted the machine in daring loops while spectators hoped for Atwood’s arrival, delaying official work and making the event the day’s top sensation.
Special to The Washington Just New York July 19. At Rockaway Hunt polo club CC Rumsey was hurt in a collision with Malcolm Stevenson during the fourth period ending the game. Cooperstown and Meadowbrook Magpies played. Rumsey unconscious, later reported not serious. Rumsey is husband of Miss Mary Harriman, daughter of the late E H Harriman.
Mrs Horace Mapes, described as insane, fired three times at Dr Edwin Fancher who had been summoned to examine her. The doctor escaped unharmed as she fled the house and later fired from the doorway, then invited him back inside.
In Sturgeon Missouri a dispute sparked by a remark about a girl led to a four man confrontation at Riggs. Frank White was killed and Melvin White mortally injured while Jake Wade and John Spence were jailed after the melee. The feud involved families over alleged insults to Spence sisters.
Five distinct shocks rocked Messina Italy today within hours but no lives were lost. The tremors sparked grave apprehension among residents as authorities assess damage and aftershocks continue.
In Canton Massillon Ohio July 10 a mob of several hundred gathered to lynch Harvey Mickens a negro accused of assaulting Myrtle Evans 16. Deputies and police on duty at the city prison repelled the mob as captors with Mickens arrived. He was later taken to the jail at Canton.
The Canadian reciprocity bill survived a serious Senate ordeal as amendments by Cummins and Simmons to expand free import lists were defeated by large margins. The vote totals showed modest support for tariff changes, with lumber and agricultural implements among items rejected. President powers to terminate the pact were favored by a separate amendment, while key senators urged swift adjournment by late July or early August as Penrose predicted rapid progress on the bill and related measures.
Dr Nicholas Murray Butler resigns from the National Educational Association board of directors sparking surprise among teachers. The forty ninth annual convention opens at the Greek theater on the UC Berkeley campus with Gov Hiram W Johnson presiding and remarks from Sp ert J Aley, Mayor P H McCarthy, President Benjamin Ide Wheeler, Mrs Ella Flagg Young, and President David Starr Jordan.
Robert Sherlock is held on loitering charges after his remark about letting his mother in law die and a poisoning incident that killed 84 year old Margaret Mote. Mrs Sherlock aided but could not prevent the suicide, and both women were burned. Sherlock to have a police court hearing Wednesday.
Seattle dispatch July 10 details the June 20 storm along the Japanese coast. Hundreds died and many ships wrecked or damaged from Nagoya to Yokohama, with 135 Nagoya buildings collapsed and 379 damaged. A tidal wave at Alaska port rose five feet and the steamer Miye was washed ashore. Off Odawara several fishing vessels vanished with over 100 fishermen lost.
Edna Goodrich, in New York with her mother, discusses a Los Angeles suit against herself and Thomas H. Dudley to annul the Goodrich Goodwin trust. She says the fund could keep Nat from poverty, and she would attend cross examining Nat in court. The trust value is estimated between 300000 and 1700000, with Dudley named as trustee after a telegram Goodwin alleges was forged. The agreement delays division of property until death of a principal.
Paris July 10 reports say John W Gates condition unchanged though illness has weakened him and rendered his state more serious.
The Washington Post reports Dr. Bennett of Pittsburg, Pa., saw pigeons War Horse and North Side Star win the Overland endurance cup, covering the 1 400 miles from Denver to Pittsburgh in six days seven hours eight seconds, beating the previous Denver sight record of eight days. The birds accomplished this despite poor weather from July 4.

In a dense fog collision off Vermilion Point Lake Superior the steamer John Mitchell of Chicago sank after being struck amidships by the William H. Mack of Cleveland. Three crewmen are missing, but Miss Fay Clemens and others were rescued by the Mack crew. The Mack arrived at Sault Ste. Marie with survivors. the Mitchell carried passengers and seven aboard.
In Kenton Ohio Garfield Kisner bluffed a bob flush to beat Sam Stone who held four aces in a draw poker game at Alger. Stone fled after allegedly assaulting Kisner, who lies in a hospital dying. Stone is being hunted by police as of this report.
James H. Van Sickle, longtime Baltimore public schools superintendent, was removed today by a reconstituted board aligned with Mayor Preston. Vote 6 to 4 cites harmony in the schools as the motive. A prior expert commission praised his work amid teacher complaints.
New York July 10 confirmation that Miss Ethel Barrymore will sue for absolute divorce from Russell Griswold Colt. Papers to be filed in New York after affidavits from Los Angeles support the action. Colt and his lawyers say they will not dodge service and await the summons. Jack Barrymore consults with attorneys for his sister as the case moves toward formal filing.

Chicago reporter notes reveal the Peavey Grain Company plans to suspend trading on the Chicago Board of Trade. President James Pettit, later found drowned in Lake Michigan, allegedly left notes backed by the firm totaling up to 1.5 million dollars. Insurance policies worth 500,000 dollars would challenge the coroner's accidental death ruling.

Atlantic City July 10 Charles W Fairbanks told Methodist Christian Endeavorers that the resort is unfit to exist because shops saloons and amusements run on Sunday. He urged change and cited conditions as worse than many European cities. Champ Clark echoed calls for civic duty and political participation urging voters to read ballots and vote.
San Francisco July 10 John Risteeng aged 70 a former Massachusetts legislator was arrested by postal inspectors on charges of robbing two blind beggars. He was paid to transport the men between home and downtown corners and allegedly opened a registered letter containing 35 dollars sent to the beggars by relatives in the Hast
Special cable reports Paris plunged into upheaval as socialists clash with the ministry over aid for discharged railway workers. Insults flew in the chamber and the budget passage was briefly blocked before the session resumed with a vote shown as 455 to 86 in favor.
