Brookins Leads as Curtiss Flies in High Wind at Atlantic City
Special to The Washington Post. In rough sea and gale force wind, Glenn Curtiss made an exhibition flight near dusk off Atlantic City to satisfy a large crowd along the Boardwalk, showing skill and nerve as the wind whipped the plane over breakers. Brookins, hailed as yesterday’s hero with a 17 vote surge, watched from shore after a Wright brothers' refusal. Curtiss planned a record attempt for the morning, weather permitting, with yacht patrols prepared for emergencies. Brooking’s ascent yesterday reached a new altitude, while he recovered and smiled after a close roar of the crowd and the night’s gusts.
