Oiler Bateman Loses Hand In Shell Accident
William D. Bateman an oiler on the torpedo boat Foote lost part of his left hand in a shell explosion at his sister’s home in Washington after bringing two shells as souvenirs from the ship. He rushed to stop his child from approaching and the shell shattered, leading to amputation at the wrist after transfer to casualty and naval hospitals. The rescued little girl was unharmed.
