Monument to John Jasper Unveiled in Virginia Churchyard

A July 4 ceremony in Richmond unveiled a monument to John Jasper, famed Negro pastor and controversial figure who preached in a round world and sun movement, clung to Scripture, and defended his beliefs against science. The stone cost 800 dollars, gifted by Jasper’s congregation, and honors his life as a stern, unyielding preacher who saved nearly $2,000 in hidden cash and led a large following from Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church.
