Iron Works Loses Suit Over James River Water Rights

The Old Dominion Iron and Nail Works Company of Richmond lost a Supreme Court case against the city of Richmond and the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. The court dismissed the appeal for lack of jurisdiction, upholding decrees that denied the iron company’s claims to water rights in the James River for power purposes. The English grant of 1784 is cited as the origin of the dispute over using river water for the Kanawha Canal and local power and supply needs.
